Settled in the Age of Saga's by the biblical patriarchs, mankind was lead by visions gifted from the Universal Architect to the location of the space that would be known as Redemption: the promised land far from the divine inferno that consumed the depraved and the corrupt of the galaxy.
A series of ancient cyclopean baroque gates connect the major routes between worlds of the Redemption Sector allowing near instantaneous travel by unknown mechanism. Each gate, hundreds of miles in diameter, is tended by colossal Techo Communion machines, servitors and toll collectors: their monopoly on technology allows them to control the majority of interstellar traffic and the transport of raw materials and commodities. Never more than four gates orbit a single system, any more and the gravitonic forces would disrupt the planetary orbits and even threaten the stability of the star itself, resulting in catastrophic destruction and supernova.
Gates are always located on the outskirts of the systems, despite travel between gates being instantaneous a journey time of weeks or months is still required to enter the system from the gates locations and reach the planets themselves. There are tales of lost, forgotten, abandoned and sealed gates drifting in space, some used by pirates and alien raiders for clandestine travel and even connecting to the farthest reaches of the galaxy.
Various governments and organisations maintain gravity drive equipped ships that allow them to travel at sub luminary speeds without the need of a jump gate, but these are few and far between and rarely in operation without the consent of the Techno Communion. Even then, these ships can still take years to reach a destination are are useful only for short trips to the nearest stars.
In between human controlled space rove aliens and rogues darting amongst star systems like insects in the vast ether. Local security forces are tasked with protection of their domains against a myriad of races such as the dreaded Xibaloch, the Vor'dreak, the Ubnolato and the shadowy eldritch race know simply as the Haunted.
Despite the Empire of Tzar's iron rule, many of the planets and stations with the Redemption Sector hold only small Imperial garrisons, the bulk of the populations follow their own customs and traditions under the totalitarian yoke of Imperial servitude. Puppet governments and organisations plead fealty to the Imperial Court, each maintaining their own armies who act as reserves in the Imperial Army.
The Imperial Navy patrols the Redemption Sector, crewed by their Marine legions who regularly show presence planet side as a reminder of the Empires power.
